Free alt text checker
Paste a description you have written — or one a plugin generated — and check it for the problems that make alt text unhelpful. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Weak: image of running shoes — redundant opening, no detail.
Better: Grey and orange trail running shoes seen from the side, with a raised heel and lugged sole.
Weak: IMG_2041.jpg — a file name.
Better: Five members of the support team outside the Bristol office.
This tool checks wording, not the page context. The same image can need different descriptions depending on the paragraph around it — and a decorative image should have an empty alt="", which the checkbox above covers.
